This dish brings back fond childhood memories. Along with Grandma's onion and potato pies, it was a staple when bread was baked in the wood oven using the bread dough. These breads are delicious, aromatic, and fluffy, perfect to enjoy as a standalone snack, in soup, or with a vegetable dish.
Try making them whenever you prepare Homemade Bread. Just reserve a piece of dough and follow the recipe steps below.
Start by preparing the bread dough using your preferred recipe. I often use the Homemade Bread dough recipe. Knead well and allow it to rise.
After setting aside a portion of the dough, roll it out to a thickness of about a finger. Slice into pieces 1.5-2 cm thick.
Shape each piece into a round ball.
Place all the dough balls closely together on a baking tray greased with a bit of oil. Let them rise for 10-15 minutes and then bake in a preheated oven at 180-200 degrees Celsius.
In the meantime, prepare the onion and garlic. Slice the onion into thin strips and fry in oil until lightly golden.
Crush the garlic and mix with half a glass of water, salt, and a dash of oil to create a savory sauce.
Remove the bread from the oven when they're nicely browned. Allow them to cool in the tray for about 10 minutes.
Separate each bread ball from the rest and transfer to a deep bowl. Pour the fried onions and oil along with the garlic sauce over the bread, mixing thoroughly to ensure each piece is evenly coated with the flavorful medley.
This bread is delightful whether enjoyed hot or cold, on its own, or paired with soups, vegetable dishes, or salads. A truly delicious treat, highly recommended.
Enjoy your meal!
