Greek Chicken Gyros Plate
As I promised, today I am showing the homemade version of the Greek gyros recipe. Although the classic fast food gyros is wrapped in flatbread and served with chips, I wanted to adapt it to our preferences and serve it on a plate. This way it is easier for the kids to eat and all the ingredients stay together in one place. This gyros recipe has become a special meal in our family and the girls are super excited when I cook it, they even eat everything, without me having to find tricks to make them eat :)
You can use the same method to make pork gyros, and you don't have to change the spice mix. But you also need to prepare some fresh homemade Tzatziki and you can make classic chips or Greek roasted potatoes, like I do. You can prepare in advance the Greek pita bread for gyros or buy some from the store, Greek or Arabic, whichever you find.
For the low carb version, I give up the pita and the chips, but I enjoy the rest of the ingredients without any regret. The kids skip the marinated onions and my husband likes it all. So, this is a versatile plate, suitable for any preference and taste :)

Step by step
Step 1
Cut the chicken in 1cm thick strips and place in a bowl.
Step 2
Add the juice from half a lemon.
Step 3
Then season with 1 tsp salt, 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp paprika and 1 tsp oregano.
Add 3 tbsp olive oil.
Step 4
Toss to evenly coat and marinate in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes. I prepare it in advance and leave in the refrigerator overnight, covered with plastic wrap or a lid.
Step 5
After this time, heat up some oil in a skillet and cook the chicken over a medium heat (stirring periodically), until it becomes brown and smells insanely good :)
Step 6
While the chicken is cooking, you can prepare the Tzatziki sauce, you can find my recipe on the website or you can make any other one you like.
I don't use dill for the sauce, so you can skip it if you don't have or you don't like it.
Step 7
Fry the chips or, even better, use my Greek roasted potatoes recipe which you can find on the website, they are super tasty!
Step 8
The onions are easy and quick to marinate:
- cut into thin slices;
- pour over some apple cider vinegar and 0.5 tsp salt;
- massage well with your hands and marinate for about 15 minutes;
And that's it!
Step 9
If you want to be cool, you can make this Greek pita bread for gyros, you can find the recipe on my website.
You can, as well, replace them with store-bought Greek pitas or Arabic flatbreads.
Step 10
For the gyros plate, I pull the pita bread to smaller pieces and I sprinkle over some olive oil, oregano and salt.
If I have time, I heat up the pieces in the oven for 5 minutes, to make them hot and soft.
Step 11
When all the above ingredients are ready for the gyros, we start to arrange the plates, according to each one's preference.
The ideal plate would consist of: pita bread + potatoes + tomato slices + tzatziki + chicken + marinated onions.
Step 12
This is what the final and ideal plate looks like but, most of the times, the kids avoid the onions or the tzatziki, I skip the potatoes and the bread, so my husband is the only one who enjoys a full option gyros plate :))
This gyros is trully fantastic and I really recommend it.
Enjoy!
